If you think voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy is an easy task, not only are you wrong, but Guardians director, James Gunn, will tell you himself (quite lividly!).
In a recent Facebook live chat, Gunn took questions from fans, and a fan decided to make a remark about Vin Diesel's job voicing Groot in the space-opera.
A Facebook user by the name of Caleb sent Gunn a comment claiming that anyone can do Diesel's job and voice Groot. Little did "Caleb" know he was going to strike a nerve! "That's bulls---!" Gunn quipped after reading the comment.
“I did the voice for Groot and we had other people do the voice for Groot," the director went on. "We had all sorts of people doing the voice for Groot, and Groot didn’t come alive until Vin [Diesel] did the voice for Groot. Vin is amazing as Groot. I’ll argue to the death with anyone that says he doesn’t make a difference or it’s a small role. It’s huge what he does for us.” Diesel really does have family everywhere.
In all seriousness, Groot was an essential part of what made Guardians of the Galaxy so magical despite only saying three (okay, five!) words throughout the film. It would have certainly been a very different feel without Diesel's low, raspy voice coming out of all that walking bark.
Diesel and Gunn will reunite for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which hits theaters May 5, 2017.
