Weta's VFX Breakdown For The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies


Weta Digital has put out a new visual effects breakdown video that showcases the brilliant work that their digital artists did on Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

For the destruction ofLaketown sequence, 1,500 buildings were modeled - interiors and exteriors - to help bring realism toSmaug's destruction of the town. For the burning ofLaketown, over 1,100 separateCGI fires were created and were hand-placed on a shot-for-shot basis. For the battle of Lonely Mountain, animators used new virtual stage tools to bring the epic CG battle sequences to life.

The adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the company of dwarves comes to a climatic conclusion when they are faced with the devastating consequences of having unleashed the dragon Smaug, and reclaiming the Lonely Mountain. They are soon embroiled in an epic battle as five great armies go to war.
