The National Treasure franchise is one often requested by fans, and while we do know there is a third entry in the series being worked on, there hasn’t been much news on the property for awhile.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with Nicolas Cage recently, during his current press tour for his new film The Trust. During their chat, they asked him when fans can expect another movie from the series, and unfortunately, the thing that people like most about the series is also the thing holding it up.

“I haven’t really heard anything about that. I do know that those scripts are very difficult to write, because there has to be some credibility in terms of the facts and fact-checking, because it was relying on historical events. And then you have to make it entertaining. I know that it’s been a challenge to get the script where it needs to be. That’s as much as I’ve heard. But they’re still working on it.”

The last entry was back in 2007 with National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The film pulled in $219,964,115 million domestically, and $457,364,600 million worldwide. The original National Treasure, released back in 2004, earned $173,008,894 million domestically, and worldwide earned $347,512,318 million.

Even with National Treasure 3 stalled a bit, Cage is keeping busy. In addition to The Trust, the actor has the upcoming films Snowden (with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, and Timothy Olyphant) and Army of One (with Wendi McLendon-Covey and Rainn Wilson), and is in pre-production on The Croods 2, where he will reprise his role as Grug.
