The Underworld franchise’s previous low bar for an opening weekend was Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is the 2009 prequel that did not feature franchise star Kate Beckinsale in the lead role. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans opened to $20.8 million.

Underworld: Blood Wars may be the worst performing Underworld film on opening weekend, but it is fairly slightly better in critical reception. Underworld: Blood Wars currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 22%, making it just the second-worst of the series. Underworld: Evolution, released in 2006, is the worst-reviewed film in the franchise, with just 16%. The original Underworld, released in 2003, remains the best-reviewed of the series with a 31% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
