WWE: Charlotte Flair Comments On Body Shamers

The internet is responsible for many positive things, but unfortunately, it brings with it some caveats, including a large amount of internet trolling. WWE Superstars are exposed to this constantly due to the nature of their jobs, especially those who are in heel roles. If you’re a female heel, sadly that is turned up even more.

WWE superstar Charlotte Flair, who is one of the top heels in the company, is used to the barrage of insults that come with being a villain. That said, it enters another category when people hurl body shaming insults that have nothing to do with what is portrayed onscreen.

Flair commented on those comments in an interview with the Press Association (via RTE), saying “Negative comments in terms of body image are the hardest thing the women probably struggle with, but I think the best thing that we can do as WWE superstars is taking that negativity and using it in a positive way, because there are so many young kids on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to not send the message of hate on to.”

As for how to deal with those critics? Flair just wants her supporters to ignore them, but it’s a hard balance to navigate being that a heel’s job is to elicit an angry reaction.

“[We need to] ignore if someone is saying something bad, and not add fuel to the fire. No one ever has a chance to get to know the real me because I do play a bad guy, and sometimes it’s hard to soak in the comments or the negativity because that’s the response you want to elicit,” she said. “I am a normal person, but that’s part of the job. I’m playing a character and that’s my role.”

Fans can all agree that ridiculing a superstar for their antics in the ring is far different than hurling personal insults at them because you have nothing better to do. They’re doing a job, just like everyone else, so keep it civil.
