A couple of days ago while filming on the Bulgaria set of Millennium Films and Nu Image’s bank heist film #211, Nicolas Cage reportedly broke his ankle.

At this time, there are no details as to how the Academy Award-winning actor broke his ankle, but a source for Deadline has described the incident as a “freak accident.”

“Cage was taken to a top hospital in Sofia, Bulgaria, near where the film is shooting. Doctors wanted to immediately perform surgery,” Deadline reports. “Cage instead decided to hop a plane to Los Angeles for treatment. That’s where the Oscar-winning star is now. His camp confirms that Cage is currently convalescing, but that he hopes to return to the set probably and resume working within two weeks.”

Although Millennium Films and Nu Image have not officially commented on the injury, it is believed that production on #211 will cease while its 53-year-old star is on the mend.

The film itself — written and being directed by York Alec Shackleton — follows a good cop (Cage) who is trying to thwart a bank heist. As for its title, “211” is the police code for robbery in progress. The cast also includes Sophie Skelton, Dwayne Cameron, Steve MacAvoy, Weston Cage, Michael Rainey Jr., Cory Hardrict, Ori Pfeffer, Mark Basnight, and Amanda Cerny.

Cage was born as Nicolas Kim Coppola, but he took the professional name Nicolas Cage, which was inspired in part by the Marvel Comics superhero Luke Cage. Cage is an American actor, who has starred in wide variety of films.

His love for comics never really dissipated, as one of Cage’s best-known roles is that of Marvel character Ghost Rider. Cage starred in Ghost Rider and a sequel called Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Cage also starred as Big Daddy in Kick-Ass, which was based on a Mark Millar comic book, but perhaps he’s even more well-known for a part he ended up not playing. The actor was set to play Superman in Tim Burton’s Superman Lives project that never saw the big screen but was detailed in the Superman documentary about the ill-fated film.
