Last week, former MythBusters host Adam Savage released a video in which he visited the set of Alien: Covenant to celebrate “Alien Day” on 4/26. When speaking with armorist John Bowring, Savage discussed the complications of developing futuristic weapons that had to appear as though they weren’t as advanced as what was seen in the original Alien films, as Covenant takes place before them.

Many of the guns used in films are made out of rubber and are immaculately painted to resemble real-world firearms, but thanks to how actors carry the weapons and how filmmakers show them, they look exactly like the real thing.

An interesting note that came up during the discussion was Savage mentioning an episode of his show in which he tested various methods of holding a firearm and their effectiveness, pointing out that the “gangster” style of holding a gun sideways was incredibly ineffective. Bowring pointed out, however, that there have been times in history where members of the military were forced to shoot their weapons in that manner, based on the strange designs of weapons at the time.

With Covenant being rated R, there’s going to be plenty of blood and guts. Considering it’s a sci-fi film, there’s more blood to be shed than just typical human blood, as Savage saw the varieties of blood, from red to black to white, covering the gamut of creatures who suffer throughout the course of the film.

Alien: Covenant hits theaters May 19.
