Starship Troopers is making its way back from the dead, and according to reports the cult classic will be getting a reboot from Columbia Pictures.
The original Starship Troopers released in 1997, and at the time it wasn’t exactly met with critical or commercial success. Regardless, somehow the film has become a staple of home viewings since then and has achieved a modicum of cult-like status.

The reboot is being written by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, who previously worked on the upcoming Baywatch reboot (via THR), and Neal H. Moritz (Fast and Furious) and Toby Jaffe are producing. The same team was previously responsible for the Colin Farrel starring remake of Total Recall.
The original Starship Troopers was produced on a budget of $105 million and domestically pulled in just over $54 million, with a worldwide gross of $121 million. While it wasn’t that successful in theaters, it did produce three direct to DVD films. The project will reportedly be based on the original novel by Robert A. Heinlein, but there are sure to be some fan service nods to the film as well.
It starred Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico), Dina Meyer (Dizzy Flores), Denise Richards (Lt. Carmen Ibanez), Jake Busey (Ace Levy), Neil Patrick Harris (Carl Jenkins), Clancy Brown (Sgt. Zim), Seth Gilliam (Suger Watkins), and Michael Ironside (Jean Rasczak).
