Stranger Things borrow many elements from 1980s cinema to create a blend of science fiction and horror that became a hit for Netflix.

One such element was a terrifying monster creature from another realm that stalked the town of Hawkins, Indiana for prey to drag to its nightmarish realm. That realm was called the Upside Down by Eleven and her friends, and the creature was called the Demogorgon, a name inspired by the monster from Mike’s Dungeons & Dragons game.

The creature spent much of its time in the shadows, but when it finally entered the light it was quite a sight to behold. That remains true even in the creatures conceptual stage. For evidence, here’s the animatronic head test that was done by practical effect workshop Spectral Motion. It is every bit as chilling as the finished Demogorgon that appeared on-screen.
