Please Stand By is a film that stars Dakota Fanning as Wendy Welcott, an autistic Star Trek fan living in a group home who learns about a Star Trek scriptwriting contest and becomes determined to submit her own entry. When her sister, played by Star Trek Into Darkness star Alice Eve (who also recently joined Marvel’s Iron Fist), proves no help Wendy takes it upon herself to make the trip to Los Angeles.

Check out the trailer above.

The film seems truly infused with Star Trek spirit and the trailer presents a charming look at why a series like Star Trek can mean so much to so many. Fans may notice Wendy’s Vulcan salute pendant. Fanning gives the salute herself on the film’s poster, accompanied by the appropriate tagline “Boldly Go,” seen below.

Some of Wendy’s script, which channels some truly classic Star Trek, can be heard in her voiceover: “Captain log. Final entry. Spock and I are the sole survivors. Enterprise, are you there?”

Her episode’s title is “The Many and the Few,” which is a reference to Spock’s famous philosophical message. She also mentions that her script involves Spock traveling to Deep Space Nine, refers to her teacher (played by Toni Collette) as “Scotty,” proves that she knows that Bones’ daughter’s name is Joanna in a Star Trek trivia contest, and speaks Klingon to a police officer (played by Patton Oswalt).

Please Stand By will come to theaters and be available On Demon on January 26, 2018.
