TrekNews.Net recently uncovered a 2015 episode of The Nerdist Podcast, in which Tarantino is asked if he’s interested in helming a Star Wars film. As he revealed, he’d be much more willing to boldly go into an installment of the Star Trek franchise.

“The actual answer to the question,” Tarantino explained, “is that I would be more inclined to direct a Star Trek [property] rather than Star Wars.”

This isn’t the first or last time that Tarantino has expressed an interest, with him recently expressing the same sentiment in a TMZ interview. But the Nerdist interview did provide a bit more insight into what the bold director would bring to the storied franchise – namely, one of its most iconic actors.

“I’m definitely a fan of the original seriesโ€ฆ in particular a fan of William Shatner‘s.” Tarantino revealed. “That’s my key into the series โ€“ William Shatner.”

Tarantino went on to express his love for J.J. Abrams’ Trek installments – aside from one key element of them.

“It really bothered me that [Benedict Cumberbatch] was playing Khan.” Tarantino added. “It really bothered me. And part of the reason that it bothered me was like โ€“ well, wait a minute, that just doesn’t workโ€ฆ The thing that I liked about the first one is that Chris Pine is playing William Shatner and Zachary Quinto is playing Leonard Nimoy as Spockโ€ฆ so, Benedict Cumberbum can’t be Khan.”

In the year’s since, it feels like the modern Trek franchise has gotten back to basics, with the help of Star Trek Beyond. While a fourth installment in the franchise – particularly one directed by Tarantino – might sound out of the realm of possibility, stranger things certainly have happened.
