CBS CEO Les Moonves expressed a high amount of confidence in Star Trek: Discovery during the company’s quarterly earnings calls with investors. To emphasize the point, he told them they could have made a quick buck by selling the series the Netflix, Amazon, or Showtime. Instead, CBS chose to bet on itself.

“We could have put Star Trek on Showtime, on the CBS Television Network or Netflix, Amazon, they all wanted it for a lot of money,” Moonves told investors. “We determined that Star Trek would be far better for All Access and will earn us more money.”

Moonves seemed confident that Star Trek: Discovery, along with the upcoming NFL season and new original and CBS television content, will push CBS All Access to the next level.

“With a full season of NFL, Star Trek: Discovery, and more and more original programming and every episode of every CBS show on CBS this fall, and international expansion, we are just getting started with All Access,” Moonves said. “This fall with Star Trek, the NFL and new programming we really think it should grow quite a bit.”

That only applies to Star Trek: Discovery in North America for now. Though CBS All Access is set to expand into foreign markets, CBS will honor the deal it already has in place to distribute Star Trek: Discovery internationally through Netflix.

Star Trek: Discovery will air its premiere episode on Sept. 24th on CBS. That episode and the show’s second episode will both be available the same evening on CBS All Access. The first half of Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season will be released weekly on CBS All Access through November. The second half of the season will air on CBS All Access beginning in January 2018.

Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.
