Variety is reporting two major developments with Universal Pictures’ highly-anticipated Scarface reboot. One good, One bad.
First, let’s get to the good. 37-year-old Mexican actor Diego Luna, who starred as Captain Cassian Andor in Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is attached to star.
Okay, so what’s the bad news? Antoine Fuqua, the director behind Training Day and The Equalizer, is no longer going to helm the project. “Sources say Fuqua very much wanted to do the film, and that he and his team were still trying to figure out a way to make it work even as Uni was meeting with other directors,” Variety reports. “But ultimately, Fuqua had already spent so much time developing the script for the next Equalizer that he simply couldn’t move on from a project he had so much invested in.”
The reboot will take cues from the immigrant rags-to-riches story, which was written by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter. It will be set in contemporary Los Angeles and focus on a Mexican immigrant.
This will be Universal’s third iteration of Scarface, which is based on Armitage Trail’s 1929 novel of the same name. The first film was made in 1932 with Howard Hawks directing and Paul Muni starring as Antonio “Tony” Camonte, and then the second oneโwhich is much more well knownโcame in 1983 with Brian De Palma directing and Al Pacino starring as Tony Montana.
