Star Wars Creator George Lucas Finds A Home For His Museum

The Star Wars franchise is bigger than ever, on the cusp of its second consecutive billion dollar movie, and now fans will have a new way to celebrate their favorite franchise. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which will house artifacts and exhibits from Star Wars amongst many other George Lucas projects and items from the history of film, finally has a home. After nearly going to Chicago but being fought by a group there, and debating between San Francisco (where Lucasfilm and the Skywalker Ranch are located) and Los Angeles, they've chosen Exposition Park in Los Angeles as the site of the museum.

"After extensive due diligence and deliberation, the Board of Directors of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is pleased to announce plans to build the museum in Exposition Park in Los Angeles," they wrote in a statement released on twitter. "We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive support we received from both San Francisco and Los Angeles during our selection process. Settling on a location proved to be an extremely difficult decision precely because of the desirability of both sites and cities."

The statement goes on to thank San Francisco for trying to secure the museum and explaining why they ultimately chose LA.

"The board wishes to extend a special thanks to Mayor Ed Lee and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for their tremendous efforts and engagement. While each location offers many unique and wonderful attributes, South Los Angeles's Promise Zone best positions the museum to have the greatest impact on the broader community, fulfilling our goal of inspiring, engaging, and educating a broad and diverse visitorship. Exposition Park is a magnet for the region and accessible from all parts of the city. As a museum uniquely focused on narrative art, we look forward to becoming part of a dynamic museum community, surrounded by more than 100 elementary and high schools, one of the country's leading universities, as well as three other world-class museums."

From here, the board will finalize details and begin construction of what they hope to be "a global destination" for film fans and historians. The museum has previously been estimated as costing between $1-1.5 billion to construct. George Lucas's personal collection of Film artifacts includes posters that currenlty adorn the walls of the Lucasfilm Ltd. and ILM campuses, plus original film reels, props, and much more. Details of what will be on display, what the construction timeline and costs are, and more will come later.
