It’s safe to assume that a large number of people have dreamed about stepping into the world of Star Wars. And for one fan, that dream got to come true, and he has some pretty awesome stories to tell because of it.

D.C. Barns, a fan from Denver, Colorado, earned a cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens after winning the Star Wars: A Force For Change contest back in 2014. Appearing as one of the bar patrons in Maz Kanata’s (Lupita Nyong’o) castle, Barns received a once-in-a-lifetime experience, which he outlined in a recent Reddit AMA.

According to Barns, the process included some very interesting direction from JJ Abrams.

“For the scene I was in,” Barns explained, “JJ Abrams wanted a very big and exaggerated reaction from all the extras. The end result in the film doesn’t seem exaggerated at all. Which is interesting. For the scenes with Daisy and John, that I watched, he wanted them to act in very subtle way. JJ Abrams is a fascinating director watch. (not that I’ve watched any others.)”

But for Barns, that direction came in handy in a surprising way during one of his scenes in the film, which was actually released as a deleted scene.

“The best moment when I was filming was a part that go cut out of the film, but made its way into the deleted scenes on the Blu-ray. But it’s when Unkar Plutt get’s his arm pulled off by Chewbacca and it gets thrown at me.”

While Barns’ role in the film was relatively small, his interactions with the film’s stars were nothing but positive.

“Harrison Ford is exactly like you see him in interviews.” Barns revealed. “Cool as anything with very dry humor. He has a kind sense about him. Daisy Ridley was super sweet and cheerful. I got the sense that she was as amazed by all of it as I was. John Boyega is very nice and happy. He is a high energy type fellow. Everyone, and I mean everyone in the cast and crew were super-amazingly nice and excited to be working on their dream!”
