Star Wars: New Details Hint At Benicio Del Toro’s Role

Lucasfilm has surely learned how to use the Force to dissuade fans from digging to hard into its films. The studio is notoriously secretive about its projects, and fans of the Star Wars franchise have come to both respect and bemoan their ironclad approach. Stars like Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley have often sung the studio’s praises when it comes to keeping information on the down-low, but some intrepid fans continue to suss out details about films.

In the fandom, few other sites are more respected than Making Star Wars when it comes to insider information and speculation. Earlier today, the site’s editor-in-chief came forward with a new post following a piece yesterday which shed light on a new planet said to feature in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But, this time, Jason Ward has turned his focus from a seedy backwater planet to the mysterious role Benicio Del Toro was cast in.

When The Last Jedi comes out this year, the film will feature an array of new talent. Del Toro will be one such star, and the actor has kept tight-lipped about his role. However, if Ward’s information, then prior reports of Del Toro being a shadowy villain seem spot-on.

“He is either named D.J. or it is his code name used by the production. He wears all black. He has a trench coat on with a Han Solo-style belt at his waist to hold his blaster,” Ward wrote. “His hair is short. He also has a strange cap that doesn’t have a bill to it. He looks slimy and dirty but the bill-less cap makes him look sort of like a throwback to a different era.”

“He belongs in the criminal underworld by the looks of him. The man in black-style character we heard about is certainly there but his style evokes a few things in the design.”

The editor went on to say that Del Toro’s character would also have a rather swanky aircraft. “His ship is really fancy,” Ward continued.

“The cockpit has a very nice singular red seat for him to pilot from. In the back of the ship, it has a communal section like the Falcon where a crew could sit and socialize. But instead of dingy white seats and a chess board it has a very nice bright curved blue booth with a table (no word on a chess board) and it looks more like a nice hotel than something Han Solo would live in…If the Falcon is a Winnebago this ship is a luxury yacht made by Bill Gates.”

Of course, Lucasfilm has no commented on any of these reports and will likely refrain from doing so. In the past, other reports have suggested Del Toro will play a variety of villains, some of which may sound familiar to fans of Legends media. Last year, the Internet began buzzing over whether Del Toro may be playing the son of Boba Fett, Vikrum. But, for now, it looks like fans will have to wait until the first trailer for The Last Jedi drops to get more information on the actor’s secretive role.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017 release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong’o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
