When it comes to shipping couples, there are few fandoms that are as gun-ho as the Star Wars community. Ever since George Lucas brought the sci-fi franchise to life, fans have been invested in its various romances. Han and Leia may have stole the original trilogy’s spotlight, but Anakin Skywalker tried to reclaim it with Padme in the prequels. So far, the newest Star Wars trilogy has lacked any notable romance, but that may change soon enough.

Recently, Vanity Fair‘s David Kamp did an interview with Star Wars director Rian Johnson to celebrate the franchise’s 40th anniversary. Reports surfaced from the chat which stressed The Last Jedi would not have any ‘Han-and-Leia’ scale affairs to follow, but that doesn’t mean the film will neglect all things lovey-dovey. Kamp recently posted a fuller transcript of his chat with Johnson, and fans can see the director does tease audiences about possible romances.
In the transcript, fans can read as Kamp asks Johnon is a romantic relationship does happen in the movie. Johnson then answered as such: “Not the way it does in the original one, no. And that’s something that I would have loved for there to have been, but when we started working forward with these characters, it just didn’t feel -“
When Kamp then ask if anyone gets involved with anyone else, Johnson’s answer took a vague turn. “Well, you’ll have to see,” he said. “But there is no one-to-one equivalent of the Han-to-Leia burning, unrequited love in our story. Yeah, I can’t speak of what Colin is doing. In our story, that’s not a centerpiece.”
The full quote stresses that romance isn’t the centerpiece of The Last Jedi, but some casual flirtation could play a role. Whatever sparks fly in the next Star Wars film could very well see a follow-through in Episode IX, so fans will want to pay attention to characters and any wandering hands. Or lips – that too.
