A popular theory which spawned early in Fear the Walking Dead‘s third season claimed that Madison Clark might be related to a core character on the series’ older sibling The Walking Dead. The claims are rooted in Madison’s southern accent which reminded fans the character once called Alabama home — a location close to The Walking Dead‘s Georgia starting point.

During a press conference at San Diego Comic Con, the cast of Fear the Walking Dead were asked which character from The Walking Dead they would like to see their characters partner up with for some apocalyptic adventures, following Robert Kirkman’s comments regarding crossover possibilities on Thursday.
Madison actress Kim Dickens had one character in mind, crediting the popular familial tie theory for the team up.
“I think Madison is, probably, might be related to Daryl Dixon,” Dickens said.

Given the close geographical proximity of the Dixon brothers and the Clark family prior to their move to Southern California, such a tie between the characters would not be unheard of. Madison was once married to a man who went on to commit suicide. Her maiden name has not been revealed on Fear the Walking Dead. Might it turn out to be Dixon, assuming she is so closely related to Daryl and Merle? Or might she be a cousin with a different name?
As for the rest of the cast members, each had their own team up in mind.
“She would go to Carol,” Ofelia actress Mercedes Mason said. “Or if Walker wasn’t around, she’d find the biggest strongest so it’d be Rick.”
“For Walker it’d be Daryl,” Walker actor Michael Greyeyes said firmly.
“I’ve always said probably Maggie,” Alycia Debnam-Carey said.
Daniel Sharman thinks Troy Otto would get along with Merle Dixon. “If Troy looks like the voice of reason, you’re in real trouble.” Dayton Callie thinks he would team up with Negan, though.
Victor Strand actor Colman Domingo didn’t have a character in mind for his team up but for his Season 3 counterpart Daniel Salazar, Domingo has great confidence for a fantasy crossover. “I think Daniel would take out Negan,” Domingo said.
Showrunner’s Perspective
When the theory of Madison beingย a sibling, cousin, or other relative to Rick Grimes or another character fromย The Walking Deadย gained traction, it reached Fear the Walking Dead showrunnerย Dave Erickson. Prior to Friday’s press conference, Erickson had ruled out any plans to connect Madison to The Walking Dead’sย Rick Grimes in an interview with ComicBook.com.
“I’ve heard that theory, and I actually think I teased it in my firstย Talking Deadย appearance, which was this notion that I found it interesting,” Erickson said. “You can hear her accent. I mean, Kim [Dickens is] from Alabama. And you can hear her accent come through every so often. And the character, as we come to learn, is also from Alabama. So I can only speak for myself and say she’s not related to Rick or anybody else on the other show. And the fact that she’s from the south is really just a coincidence.”
Kirkman’s Tease
Looking at the two series, there are a number of reasons why the shows can’t overlap, with the two biggest being conflictingย timelinesย and geographical locations. However, during his panel a San Diego Comic Con, writer and creator of both seriesย Robertย Kirkmanย presented an example of how the two shows might finally connect to one another aside from existing in the same universe.
“If Oklahoma ever went up in a nuclear cloud, you’d see it onย The Walking Deadย and onย Fear the Walking Dead, you’d see it…I don’t know the exactย timeline,”ย Kirkmanย said. “Fear the Walking Deadย takes place roughly around the time of Season 1 and beginning of Season 2 inย The Walking Dead.ย Walking Deadย Season 8 is taking place with the theoreticalย Fear the Walking Deadย Season 7. Weย gottaย get there.” It’s impossible, according to the fans, withย Kirkmanย adding “for now.”
“Right now theย timelinesย are so different that it’s impossible,”ย Kirkmanย said.
Such an event would have to occur soon onย The Walking Deadย for carryover onย Fear the Walking Dead. Heading into Season 8, if the nuclear explosion occurs onย The Walking Dead, the characters currently residing at Broke Jaw Ranch onย Fear the Walking Deadย would have to survive for a few more years before seeing it or feeling its effects.
