Fear the Walking Dead saw an unexpected relationship forming on Sunday night when Jeremiah Otto opened up to Nick Clark at Broke Jaw Ranch.

The two characters discussed their pre-apocalyptic lives, sharing stories of difficult times and not-so-different issues they had dealt with. One was a drug addict, the other an alcoholic. While the Fear the Walking Dead audience saw exactly how Nick Clark overcame his drug addiction, newcomer Jeremiah Otto’s dark past was kept in the dark until Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame pulled the curtain back a bit.

In the midst of the deep conversation, Nick asked Jeremiah what made him put the bottle down for good. The reason: he “damn near shot [his] dick off.” As it turns out, the line which revealed the reason for Jeremiah’s quitting drinking was improvised.

“I came up with that as I was going out the door,” Jeremiah Otto actor Dayton Callie said. “As we were shooting the scene. I forget what the line was and I was like, ‘Hey that wouldn’t make me quit drinking.’ I think I said, ‘It damn near blew my head off.’ That’s not that bad anymore if you just shot your dick off. So we just wanted to use that and they decided to keep it.”

According to Callie, such a terrifying experience would be enough to “make you want to quit drinking,” though he admits he is unsure “any of the female writers would’ve come up with that.”

“That was the worst thing I could think of.”
