To end its 2016 run, The Walking Dead saw Rick getting his python back for the first time since Negan took it in the Season 7 premiere a couple of months prior. When the show returns, the classic good guys versus bad guys story which has been mastered by the Star Wars franchise like no where else will be on display. Executive producer Tom Luse made the comparison with Rick’s bunch against Negan’s to Star Wars in a recent Q&A.
“This is the Rebel Alliance fighting back against the Empire,” Luse said. “We all want that coming together of all these great characters, for them to see each other and realize that they as a group are strong because of the love and respect they show to each other. They know what that means and that gives them strength as well. It was a terrific moment. Every cast member was thrilled to do that scene and work together. This show is a hard show to do. We shoot in the heat of Georgia, in rough conditions and we have more bugs per capita than any other place. It’s crazy and our cast has always been there for each together.”
The Rebel Alliance has to rely on each member of its army to have a chance against its oppressors. The Walking Dead’s survivors from Alexandria will have to follow the same format — relying on unified trust, sacrifice, and effort.
“I think ‘Rise Up’ has a nice grassroots connotation to it,” Luse said. “It doesn’t just mean get up off the ground. It means all of us have to get up off the ground and work together. The great thing about The Walking Dead is it’s not just Rick, it’s not just Carol, it’s not just Darylโฆ there are so many strong people in our group. It’s the togetherness connotation as much as it is the strength connotation that makes it special.”
