Morgan Jones has been developing a relationship with the Kingdom’s Benjamin. The emotional void left in Morgan following the loss of his son Duane appeared to be somewhat fulfilled by his mentoring of Benjamin, as he saw a reflection of his son’s innocence in the young man from the Kingdom.

The Walking Dead took Benjamin from us on Sunday night.

No one is more effect by Benjamin’s death that Morgan. Shortly after the life faded from the young man, Morgan snapped. He head off on a trip by himself, having flashes of his past all along the way.

On the following slides, we examine the moments we saw in Morgan’s flashes during the “Bury Me Here” episode of The Walking Dead.

Duane

Several images which flashed across the screen brought Duane back to the AMCย series for the first time since Season 1. The character, Morgan’s son, was mentioned in Season 3 when he was revealed to have been killed on their journey outside of Atlanta.ย

During Morgan’s flashes, his young son Duane graced the screen at least twice.

Clear

In the time Morgan spent by himself outside of Atlanta, he developed a creed before adopting the “all life is precious” bit.

Morgan believed that he had to “clear” everything. This applied to people, zombies, and all things near him. During his stint as a certifiablyย insane human, Morgan barricaded a small town and killed everything that came near him. He was willing to kill Rick Grimes, Michonne, and Carl in that time.

Benjamin

Throughout the flashes, Morgan had at least half a dozen moments reminding him of Benjamin.

Some moments showed Morgan and Benjamin in happier times, as the mentoring took place on their way to the drop which was Benjamin’s last and Morgan asked about a girl Benjain was talking to. Others saw Benjamin in intense pain, having been shot in the leg, and one memory saw Benjamin’s life fading in Carol’s house.

Rest in peace, Benjamin.

Atlanta

One of Morgan’s flashes took him back to his Atlanta home.

The pilot episode made an appearance in Episode 7×13. The moments which saw Rick and Morgan’s introduction, when Morgan welcomed Rick into his home and looked after him, educating him about what happened to the world, have clearly been prevalent in Morgan’s mind.

The Journey

Morgan’s journey from the “Clear” episode to his all-different return in Season 5 was certainly an adventure. His encounter with Eastman, his adopting of the “all life is precious” mantra, and his time spent alone leading up to the encounters shaped the character we see today.

Morgan’s journey, seen in the East episode, was seen in his flashes.

Here’s Not Here

When Morgan was crazy in Season 3 and when he redeemed himself with Eastman, he developed a habit of marking objects with strange sayings. “Clear” was his favorite but some others became common wherever Morgan would go.

In his flashes, signs Morgan wrote reading, “You Only Get One,” “Here’s Not Here,” and “Just Listen,” took the screen for a few moments.

Carol

Carol has been an important factor to Morgan. She was a killing machine and he appears to have convinced to be something else. Shortly after their meeting in Alexandria, Carol decided to banish herself in an effort to stop killing to protect.

During Morgan’s flashes, he saw a glimpse of Carol crying over Benjamin’s death from the same episode.

His Wife

When we met Morgan in the series premiere of The Walking Dead, he was mourning the loss of his wife.ย

The flashes Morgan had while contemplating suicide showed us that he is far from recovered from the loss ofย Jenny Jones. The two most important people in Morgan’s life are both gone. Their memories are triggered by the loss of Benjamin. During the flashes, audiences caught a look at the photo of Jenny which Morgan kept close to him in the series premiere.

Richard

This all, of course, was caused by Richard. If he didn’t hide a cantaloupe from the Kingdom’s drop for the Saviors, Benjamin would still be a live.

Morgan and Richard have typically had opposing views on what to do about Negan and the Saviors but that doesn’t mean Richard hasn’t had enough of an influence on Morgan to burn a mark into his memory.

ย

King Ezekiel

One of the most influential characters with Morgan recently has been King Ezekiel. The extravagant leader of the Kingdom leads his people in a manner which seeks to prevent violence and death for all parties.

Morgan gets behind King Ezekiel’s methods, at least until now, and the King has made enough of a mark on Morgan to pop up in his flashes — which is interesting because Rick Grimes never showed up.
