During the show’s seventh season, the writing of the season saw McDermitt’s character electing to betray the beloved Alexandria survivors in favor of the villainous Negan. The actor had been receiving negative remarks and even death threats, all prompting him to deactivate his accounts. Now, McDermitt has been asked about shutting down his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

While McDermitt isn’t particularly interested in discussing the move, he did open up a bit about his thoughts regarding the online platforms.

“I’m not really going to get into that too much,” McDermitt said. “I just know that the internet is just kind of dark and negative place, which just kind of breeds that mentality and those sorts of thoughts. I think that if people go left unchecked, there’s no consequences for what they say on the internet. It’s just unfortunate so, you know, it is what it is. Unfortunately, nothing’s being done about it at this point. Oh, well.”

McDermitt was not the only Walking Dead star to have dropped out of social media. Shortly after McDermitt went dark, The Walking Dead‘s Tara actress Alanna Masterson deactivated her Twitter account. Since, however, the actress has returned.

McDermitt’s Original Message

According to the source posting the above video, McDermitt’sย message to unsupportive followers was posted on the night of The Walking Dead‘s Season 7 finale.ย

“Death threats, don’t send me death threats, because I will report all that s— to the cops. I’m just sick of it,” McDermitt said. “You can hate Eugene, I don’t care. You can think whatever you want but when you start saying you hope I die, I don’t know if you’re talking about Josh or Eugene. I gotta report that s—, so, just don’t be an a—hole. And just stop complaining. Just stop complaining about everything on the Internet. Just go spend time with your family or friends or loved ones. Just get off the Internet.”

McDermitt did conclude his video in a high note for the fans he has always appreciated. “I love you,” McDermittย said. I do. I love you guys.”
