Fans of The Walking Dead absolutely loved the introduction of King Ezekiel in the latest episode. The ruler of The Kingdom came right in and charmed the pants off audiences, and many fans are claiming he is instantly their favorite character.

The writers and producers couldn’t have asked for a better reception to such an off-beat personality. Khary Payton has received nothing but praise for the fan-favorite comic character, and it looks all things are full steam ahead for The Walking Dead.

According to another star of the show, we could have been experiencing a very different Monday morning.

In an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com’s Walking Dead Insider Brandon Davis, Lennie James says this character could have seriously flopped.

James plays the character Morgan, who was one of only two returning characters who have had the chance to work with Ezekiel. Brandon asked him about that experience, and the actor had this to say:

“He is a character that, in the hands of a lesser actor, could have gone really, really wrong. But Khary [Payton] gets it absolutely right. He lands it at the right place, he kept it at the right pace, and he sets it at the right tone.”

For an actor of Lennie James’ tenure, that is extremely high praise. High, but not undeserved. Fans have made it clear that they loved Khary’s take on King Ezekiel, and they can’t wait to see more of him in future episodes.

The Walking Dead returns on Sunday, November 6 at pm ET on AMC.
