Few deaths have had an impact of characters within The Walking Dead and fans alike as Glenn Rhee’s.

The brutal nature of the character’s sendoff is a part of why fans have been so distraught since his departure in the Season 7 premiere but the 15 episodes which followed were built around his family of survivors rallying to take down the man who killed him. Heading into Season 8, the Alexandria Safe-Zone has finally rounded up enough allies to jump into a war with Negan and the Saviors.
Regardless of who wins the war, Maggie Rhee will be forced to raise her and Glenn’s child without its father, thanks to Negan. Still, Maggie actress Lauren Cohan insists there is plenty the baby can still learn from Glenn and the other characters on the show.
“What [Glenn] would have wanted to teach the baby or expose the baby to is just that bravery and comedy and impulsive energy that he had,” Cohan said. “It’s probably hard to say but I hope that everybody of the family that is alive is gonna pass those things on and tell those stories to this little girl or guy, as well as who Hershel was, who Beth was, who Michael who played Abraham was…”

Yeun’s Perspective
Glenn actor Steven Yeunย also weighed in on the character’s legacy just a few weeks ahead of Cohan’s comments at San Diego Comic Con. During a panel at Walker Stalker Con in Nashville, the actor left a piece of advice for his surviving family.
“I would say, ‘You do you.’ ‘You do us.’ And, ‘You do you for us,’” Yeun said.
Yeun, however, does not necessarily agree with fans who wish he had survived on the show — implying his fate was largely inevitable as a propeller for what came next.ย “I think the storyline that came after had to happen, which is this rise of these awesome women characters on the showโฆ It’s because, if they keep getting pushed around like that, they’re gonna get pissed and they’re gonna whoop your aโ! โฆ I don’t know how much would’ve changedโฆ”
As for Maggie, Yeunย has no worries about her as a mother and survivor.ย “She’s strong, she’s tough, she’s like a bad-aโ woman,” Yeun said. “You look at her and really wonder what makes her so strong tough and bad-ass but I think it’s because she never lived selfishly or for herself. She always lived selflessly for either her child or the legacy of her sister or the legacy of her father or the legacy of her husband. A person like that will continue regardless.”

Spoilers for The Walking Dead comics and potentially TV series follow!
On the pages of Robert Kirkman’s comics, Glenn’s death serves as a similar catalyst for the war with Negan. While Maggie emerges as a leader at the Hilltop and plays a key role in the feud, she does it all while carrying hers and Glenn’s baby.
Following the war, a time jump covers a time span which is often suspected of being about two years long. In that time, Maggie delivers her baby — a boy which she names Hershel. The baby resides at the Hilltop and becomes the number one priority for the Hilltop’s cemented leader.ย
