The Walking Dead is a show which prides itself on reinventing its tone with every half season. Showrunner Scott Gimple makes a concerted effort to keep the fresh, which he’ll tell you is important seven years into a series. Such has been the case as clear contrast between the first eight episodes of The Walking Dead Season 7 and the first three of the back eight has been stark.

When the season ends, it will do so on a note completely opposite of where the season began. Both showrunner Scott Gimple and Dwight actor Austin Amelio have teased as much in exclusive interviews with ComicBook.com. While Gimple calls the end point, “drastically different,” from the beginning, Amelio says it is a “big turning point.”

The words “turning point” might be a revealing indication of what we can expect from the 16th episode of Season 7.

The Walking Dead covers about 20 issues of Robert Kirkman’s in an average season. Season 7 started with the events of issue #100 and has since followed the books very closely. However, the introduction of Oceanside in Episode 7×06 and Jadis’ new junkyard gang are both deviations from the books which have taken extra time away from achieving all 20 of those issues this season.

Given the events of issue #114 of the comics, it seems like a fits-the-bill turning point which fans will be ecstatic to see in the Season 7 finale. Spoilers for the comics, and potentially TV series, follow.

If issue #114 is an accurate end point for Season 7’s TV adaptation, fans will get a taste of the Season 6 finale which saw Negan lining up a couple of Alexandrians for another eeny-meeny-miny-moe execution. However, Paul “Jesus” Rovia will come to the rescue! Jesus sneaks up on the villainous faction and takes out a few of their soldiers before going hand to hand with Negan, making him miss and getting a few jabs in.

Just when Jesus gets in control and the Saviors have their guns pointed at a hostage Negan, Ezekiel, Shiva and the Kingdom show up to help Alexandria in battle for an unexpected yet exhilarating twist. The tiger chows down on some Saviors and Negan is sent fleeing back to his Sanctuary hideout to regroup.

Issue #114 ends with Negan telling his Saviors that they are going to war.

A victory for Rick, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom would certainly be considered a “turning point” seeing as the season started with Negan bashing skulls of Alexandrians and having complete control their fates. The possibility remains that the AMC series can deviate from the books but that rules out any possibilities of speculation based on the source material.

We’ll see what the team behind The Walking Dead has in store for us with the Season 7 finale on April 2, with four more episodes set to air before it.
