When the AMC series returns with its 100th overall episode, it will do so guns blazing. Ripping from pages of Robert Kirkman’s comics which were trudging through the All Out War storyline at the equivalent point, the TV show will launch with a run showrunner Scott Gimple is calling “massively heavy on the action.”

“I really wanted to push into different ways than we’ve done things in a long time, just by virtue of we’re a show going into its eighth year and I really don’t want to do what we’ve done before, even if we’ve done it really well,” Gimple said. “If we’re super satisfied with it, that’s why we shouldn’t do the same thing. And because of that and really mostly because of the narrative itself, I had us embrace a really action-heavy story for several episodes in a row.”

With a massive cast of characters to spare at this point, it’s possible The Walking Dead will burn through main players as the action doesn’t aim to slow down through at least the first quarter of Season 8. “Even what I would call the quieter episode, which is episode 5, even looking at that, it still doesn’t feel chill and introspective,” Gimple said.

Gimple’s account is not unlike writer/creator Robert Kirkman’s, which he opened up about over the weekend at the Television Critics Association’s press tour, saying The Walking Dead “has been all about an expanding scale for the last two seasons, and that’s really hitting its pinnacle this season.”

“We’ve got all these different factions, all these different locations – the Hilltop, the Sanctuary – and getting all these people together and continuing to expand the scale in a cool way, but really using all these pieces to their fullest,” Kirkman went on. “We’ve spent a lot of time setting these characters up, and now we’re going to bash them against each other and see what happens. โ€ฆ This is another continuation of that; this is a very fresh take on the world of The Walking Dead, and we’re going to be breaking a lot of new ground this season.”
