The Walking Dead introduced another new community on Sunday night with its Swear episode as Tara discovered a settlement backed with armed women. The group (called Oceanside) was not very welcoming, however.

Upon realizing Tara was checking out their community from the woods, the community rushed to their armory and started shooting at her. They never spoke a word, vocally. However, a series of clicking sounds prompted their quick and precise preparations for tracking down Tara.

Immediately, fans thought of morse code because of all of the theories involving the form of communication lately.

It all started back in Episode 7×04 when Negan brought Daryl to Alexandria. Earlier in the same episode, a portrait of American Morse Code was seen hanging on the wall in Rick’s Alexandria home. When Daryl saw Rick for the first time since being holed up in a cell at the Sanctuary, he blinked in quite n unusual way, sparking the belief that he is planning something with the Sheriff.

“I would like to live in a world where Daryl Dixon residuously learns morse code and knows that Rick has an intimate knowledge of morse code, as well, and that they have practiced this with blinks,” showrunner Scott Gimple told ComicBook.com. “I would love that.”

“I will also say that it was an incredibly sunny day,” Gimple said.

While Gimple seems to be debunking the popular morse code theory, he never definitively ruled either way on the subject.

Should these morse code theories turn out to be true, The Walking Dead will have earned a level of complexity which it has not otherwise utilized. If the communities have certain characters who can communicate using morse code, the skill will serve as a major advantage in the inevitably impending war against Negan and the Saviors.

Of course, the possibility remains that the clicks heard at the Oceanside community were simply a traditional warning call to send the women to the armory.
