While The Walking Dead may have somewhat ignored its own mythology in the Say Yes episodes when zombies had no reaction to a gunshot, it did remember some important details of its main character.

During the Rick and Michonne-centric opening montage to Sunday night’s episode, the two rolled around in the back of a van for some extracurricular activities on their scavenging run. In doing so, the AMC series remember an important moment from its series premiere in 2010 which saw Rick Grimes get shot while policing the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia.
In a rare moment which saw Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln shirtless, he rolled on top of his girlfriend and revealed his back to the audience. In doing so, he also revealed a scar. That scar was acquired in Rick’s gun fight with criminals before the world ended.

As the story goes, the gunshots launched Rick into a coma from which he would not awaken until the world ended. Since, the character has endured some challenging battles which scarred the rest of his body, such as several instances where his hands are sliced up, his face is beaten beyond recognition, and the worst might not have happened yet.
The Walking Dead has reached a point where callbacks to previous seasons, moments, and characters have become quite common. In fact, Say Yes contained a touching speech about Rick’s friend Glenn Rhee and their meeting in the pilot episode, which is hardly the only instance which has mentioned the character who was killed off to start the season.
