“Look at the flowers.”
Such a simple phrase was made iconic by AMC‘s The Walking Dead when Carol Pelettier had to instruct little girl Lizzie to do just that as she shot her in the back of the head. With little room for any other choice as the character had slaughtered her own sister in an effort to convince the living that the dead were still alive, tears streamed down Carol’s face when she did what she knew was required of her.

Since those fateful moments, Carol has not talked about slaying Lizze just after the killed Mika to anyone other than Tyreese. With Tyreese now dead, as well, one has to wonder: Will Carol ever talk about these moments with anyone else? Do they still weigh heavily on her after everything else that has happened?

Melissa McBride opened up about both of those questions in an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com.

“I do think that it is something that weighs heavy on her, and keeping that stuff, keeping those secrets, that’s just one more stain to add to her wall of shame,” McBride said. “I think that she has a wall like that where she just puts these things, and also Tyreese, Tyreese says, ‘Just don’t ever tell anybody.’”
Carol’s wall is one of the heaviest of any character on The Walking Dead. Her actions are justified by survival but in preserving her own life, Carol and others have put an end to countless souls. Still, the moments with Lizzie in Mika in Season 5 are among the heaviest which weigh on Carol today.
“It’s just a burden, and it’s a horrible feeling even though she had her reasons to do it, and it made the only sense at the time, it still is like a filth that you just can’t wash off,” McBride says. “I don’t know if she ever will [tell anyone], but I think about that myself for her. Are they ever going to let her tell anybody, or is it ever going to come up again? It was kind of a big deal.”
If Carol were to open up to anybody about the moments, many would suspect Daryl to be the most likely candidate. The two reunited in Episode 7×10 (Say Yes) and put their burdens of survival on display, sharing endless wounds but also a deep chemistry.
