Having been on television for seven years, The Walking Dead now has plenty of room to make callbacks and references to previous seasons which fans who have been along for the entire ride can appreciate it.

In Episode 7×12 (Say Yes), it did just that.
During Rick and Michonne‘s conversation about the future and rebuilding civilization, Rick’s view of the potential futures turned a bit dark for a moment. He realized that he, Michonne, or others could die at any moment, but someone would have to continue leading the charge. He insisted that Michonne press on if he himself doesn’t survive.
“If it’s me who doesn’t make it, you’re gonna have to lead the others forward, because you’re the one who can,” Rick said.

This isn’t the first time Michonne has heard those words, pushing her towards being a leader. In Season 6 Episode 3 (Thank You), the episode which saw Glenn fall off of a dumpster and into a pit of zombies, he delivered the same sentiments to Michonne with the exact same words.
“You’ve gotta get everybody back,” Glenn said. “You’re the one who can.”
Of course, shortly after saying those words, Glenn found himself hiding under a dumpster. We can only hope Rick Grimes doesn’t suffer such a fate!
This hardly the first time The Walking Dead has mirrored previous season lately. Daryl Dixon’s The Cell episode featured another callback to Glenn through Negan’s dialogue to Daryl, also sparking memories of Merle. Also, prior to outright mentioning Shane Walsh to Michonne an episode later, Rick delivered the same threat to Spencer which he offered to Shane years earlier.
