Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead, “The Damned,” saw the shocking return of Morales — one of the show’s few still-living characters from season 1. Rick’s old ally is now a full-fledged Savior, and he’s threatening to turn Rick over to Negan.

“I called them back, because you’re a prize, Rick,” Morales says, gun drawn. “We’ve been told we don’t kill you, the widow, or the king — not if we don’t have to. So why are you here, Rick? I know you. Just like before. You’re always the guy willing to rush in. But why? What is it you’re looking for? Nothing to say, huh? It doesn’t matter. Not anymore. Not for you, or anyone else you brought in here. ‘Cause what’s left of my people, they’re coming. And we’ll get you to Negan, or we won’t. Either way, we’re gonna settle your sh—t, Peaches.”

Interestingly, the Saviors are under orders to capture, if possible, Alexandria leader Rick, de facto Hilltop leader Maggie, and Kingdom leader King Ezekiel — a rule that Morales is all too eager to follow. You’ll have to keep tuning in to find out why Morales has gone over to the dark side, but answers may come as soon as episode 8×03, “Monsters,” which will continue Rick and Morales’ tense confrontation.

Morales may serve as the basis for the announced crossover between The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead, with actor Juan Pareja saying it’s “a real possibility.”

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
