Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 Fan Theory Debunked by Showrunner

Dexter: Resurrection showrunner Clyde Phillips has debunked one of the biggest fan theories from the show. After years of rocky endings and unsatisfying seasons, fans were willing to give the franchise another chance with Dexter: Resurrection and were rewarded with one of the best seasons of the entire show. After a brush with death, Dexter Morgan’s past starts catching up with him once again while trying to reconcile with his estranged son in New York City. Of course, new threats also emerge and tempt Dexter’s dark passenger, leading to more conflict than ever before. It gives fans exactly what they want without much self-loathing or attempts to punish Dexter.

Ultimately, that’s why Dexter: Resurrection works. It’s giving fans what they want and the writers even break the fourth wall to address the audience directly in the final scene of the show to let them know that they are heard. Now, fans are anxiously awaiting Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 which hasn’t technically been formally announced by Paramount or Showtime, but is gearing up right now. Creator Clyde Phillips recently confirmed that they will open up their writers room on October 6th and then begin shooting sometime next spring. In the meantime, fans are left to theorize about what’s to come.

Dexter: Resurrection Creator Debunks Mia Theory

Since Mia was killed in Dexter: Resurrection Episode 6, fans have been speculating that things aren’t exactly what they seem. Charley paid off a prison guard to deal with Mia, but it was never explicitly revealed what she told him to do. Eventually, Batista and the NYPD detectives go to interrogate her, but it’s revealed that she killed herself in her cell and the guard who was paid off pronounces her dead. The implication is that the guard staged her suicide, but some fans believe the guard helped Mia fake her own death to get her out of prison.

Personally speaking, I always found this far fetched since they’d need to do an autopsy on Mia and then bury/cremate her body, but the theory became more prevalent after the Dexter: Resurrection season finale. When Dexter is digging through Prater’s files, he discovers Mia’s file which says “active” while a bunch of others, including the deceased Canton Clubber, are marked “inactive”. Some took this as a sign that Mia was still alive, but really, it’s more likely that Prater just hasn’t updated her file since everyone around him has been dropping like flies and he’s been pre-occupied with entertaining Dexter.

Creator Clyde Phillips spoke about this theory on the Dissecting Dexter podcast and denied that it was a deliberate tease for the future. Of course, anything could happen, but this seems to be debunked. Although Dexter: Resurrection is planned to have three seasons, Phillips has noted that they only have ideas of where things could go and that they still have lots of blanks to fill in. It’s entirely possible they’ll bring Mia back as even actress Krysten Ritter has teased there have been conversations around the character’s future, but that might have been regarding a spin-off.

However, it seems unlikely any Dexter spin-offs will happen following the cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin Season 2. Phillips has candidly revealed his frustration over the decision to cancel a successful show and suggested that it’s unlikely Paramount will move forward on the planned Trinity Killer series. That likely casts some doubt on any other Dexter spin-offs that may have been in development, as Phillips noted the plan prior to Paramount’s merger with Skydance was to build out a television universe similar to Yellowstone. The writer spent a year in Los Angeles hammering out a plan for future Dexter shows, but it seems like the sole focus will now be on Dexter: Resurrection.
