Stranger Things fans may recall that Dustin wore a Brontosaurus hoodie from the Science Museum of Minnesota in the first episode of the second season. Not surprisingly, the museum was flooded with requests for the hoodie – and they were very happy to oblige. You can purchase an exact replica from the show right here. However, if you want to stir up some controversy, you have another option.
The Smithsonian has unveiled their own version of the hoodie that features an Apatosaurus skeleton instead of the Brontosaurus. As you may or may not know, the Brontosaurus was reclassified in the early 20th century as being part of the same genus as Apatosaurus – which relegated the name Brontosaurus to a synonym. However, in 2015 it was decided that the Brontosaurus was distinct enough to justify classifying it into a separate genus. Though the use of the name Brontosaurus persisted even in academic circles during its period of obsolescence, it has been officially restored to its former glory.

So, the Smithsonian’s hoodie is basically a joke that paleontologists who also happen to be Stranger Things fans might find amusing or infuriating depending on their point of view. It’s kind of like wearing a shirt that classifies Pluto as a planet, or wearing the Upside Down version of Dustin’s hoodie. A hoodie for the dark, cold world where the Brontosaurus doesn’t exist. Deceptive Lizard indeed.
