The collective hearts of Supernatural fans across the country were broken last week, as the season finale killed off two of its main characters. Now, a week later, Mark Sheppard has finally said goodbye to Crowley once and for all.

As the season came to a close, audiences watched as Crowley and Castiel were both detroyed. Crowley was the more heartbreaking of the two, considering he sacrificed himself for Sam and Dean.

Now Supernatural fans know that anyone can come back from the dead on that show. Hell, Sam and Dean have returned to the land of the living many times. However, in the cases of Castiel and Crowley, that resurrection seemed unlikely.

Unfortunately, Sheppard confirmed this week that Crowley was no more. The actor, who had appeared in 72 episodes of the series, posted a farewell message to Supernatural on Instagram.

The post contained a photo of Sheppard, blowing fans a kiss, and wearing a Crowley-themed shirt. The writing across his chest was enough to bring fans to tears, as it read, “Even When I Lose, I Win.”

Sheppard utilized the famous quote in his message as well. He gave a shout-out to all of the fans, thanked them for the support, and gave a nod to the cast and crew on the show. Then, basically announcing his departure, Sheppard said it was “Time for something new.” He wrapped up the post with the beginning of the quote, “Even when I lose…” referencing his character’s death.

When Supernatural returns this fall, for Season 13, it will be without Castiel and Crowley. Those two were the longest-tenured characters on the show, outside of Sam and Dean.
