8 Upcoming Fantasy TV Shows You Need To Be Excited About

There’s something so appealing about getting transported to another world, one where magic and dragons aren’t just a pipe dream. For years, the only place to experience a live-action or animated fantasy story that didn’t have to cut corners was in a movie theater. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was a smash hit because it embraced J. R. R. Tolkien’s source material in a way that had never been tried before. However, in the 2010s, a door was opened on the small screen that allowed for adaptations as impressive as The Lord of the Rings. Game of Thrones became the biggest thing since sliced bread, and countless shows have followed in its footsteps.

While the streaming boom has sent several fantasy TV shows to the chopping block before they were ready, there are always more coming down the pike. Here are eight upcoming series that you need to be excited about.

8) God of War

Video game adaptations get a bad rap, but they’re starting to turn a corner. HBO’s The Last of Us, despite its controversial second season, isn’t going anywhere. Prime Video will look to borrow a move out of its competitor’s playbook by bringing the God of War series to life in live-action for the first time. While a release date for the show has yet to be revealed, showrunner Ronald D. Moore confirmed it will follow Kratos’ conflict with the Norse gods.

7) Fourth Wing

There are very few books that hit the ground running as hard as Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing. The book about a young dragon rider named Violet Sorrengail was optioned into a series shortly after its release, with Michael B. Jordanโ€™s production company, Outlier Society, taking on the project alongside Amazon MGM Studios. With Fourth Wing being the first book in a planned five-part series, there’s plenty of ground for the creatives to cover.

6) Assassin’s Creed

Netflix has its finger in just about every pie, including video game adaptations. An Assassin’s Creed live-action series is in the works at the streamer that will hopefully make up for the mistakes of the 2016 movie. While story details are scarce, it’s sure to take place at a pivotal point in history that could use fewer villains roaming around.

5) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

While Game of Thrones didn’t have the ending everyone wanted, HBO still had enough faith in the series to greenlight a spinoff, House of the Dragon, which follows the battle for the Iron Thrones a couple of hundred years before Robert’s Rebellion. Since that was also a hit, another spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is on the way. This time around, the stakes will be lower than ever, with the show focusing on a single knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his squire, Egg.

4) Harry Potter

The Harry Potter book series elevated the fantasy genre to new heights, proving that it could appeal to both children and adults. All the sales led to a movie series that had just as much financial success. However, attempts to expand the Harry Potter series on the big screen failed miserably. The only thing left to try is a reboot, which is set to drop on HBO Max in 2027. The new adaptation promises to set itself apart by covering more ground than the movies.

3) A Court of Thorns and Roses

Unlike the other shows on this list, the A Court of Thorns and Roses TV show, based on Sarah J. Maas’ popular book series, isn’t in active development. However, it was at one point, and with Maas still shopping the project to other networks, it’s impossible to ignore. It’s only a matter of time before Maas finds the right partner and begins working on the series again. There’s just no way that Feyre Archeron’s adventures stay exclusively on the page forever.

2) Magic: The Gathering

Books aren’t the only place to discover fantasy worlds that are ripe for adaptation. The card game Magic: The Gathering is getting an animated series on Netflix that promises to do the expansive mythology justice. All the scripts for the series are ready, but it will take some time to complete the animation. In the meantime, fans can continue playing the game and create their own adventures.

1) Talamasca: The Secret Order

AMC is carving itself out a nice corner in the fantasy genre by adapting Anne Rice’s novels, starting with Interview With a Vampire. 2025 will see the release of the third series, Talamasca: The Secret Order, which is all about a secret organization that tracks magical creatures. No monster will be able to cause trouble without Big Brother knowing about it.
