Arrow Australian Promo Reveals Major Felicity Smoak Spoiler

Big honkin' Arrow spoilers follow.

A newly-released Australian TV spot for Arrow leaked online by a fan has apparently blown the big cliffhanger left dangling at the end of the show's midseason finale last month, and revealed the fate of Felicity Smoak.

During a hospital waiting room conversation between Donna Smoak and Oliver Queen, Felicity's mother tells Oliver, "The damage to her spinal cord is permanent. She's never going to walk again."

You can check out the clip below (while it's still online).

There has been a lot of speculation recently that Felicity could take on the role of Oracle, the wheelchair-using source of superhero intel in the pre-Flashpoint DC Universe. Originally, that character was Barbara Gordon -- better known as Batgirl -- whose spine was pierced during an attack by The Joker.

For years, fans have speculated that Felicity might step into the Oracle role (one filled, albeit without using the name "Oracle," by Green Arrow's eventual love interest Chloe Sullivan in Smallville) -- and so it wasn't surprising that someone asked producers at the roundtable whether Felicity would play a role in the Season Two episode titled "Birds of Prey."

"She plays a role, but not in the way you're hoping," said Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim at the time. "Hopefully we'll get there--that occurred to us as well but we didn't have an opportunity to do that in [Episode] 17."

That "hopefully we'll get there" seemed to be looming when, in Season Three, there was an episode titled "Oracle." That episode, which was to revolve around Felicity's backstory, was eventually retitled "The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak," without official explanation. The prevailing rumor at the time was that Oracle was off the table due to the introduction of James Gordon as the lead character on Gotham. In the time since, rumors have cropped up that Barbara Gordon may appear as Oracle in the big-screen DC productions spinning out of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad next year.

Oracle was rumored to be in the lineup for TNT's now-aborted Titans live-action series. If true, that would indicate that DC was comfortable enough letting the character head to TV...and would suggest that Felicity's new codename (all we really know is that it's coming soon and it has an A in it) could actually be Oracle.

Many of those same fans who expected to see this, though, will now point out that in a world where we have magic, Mirakuru and more, permanent paralysis might be slightly less permanent than it is in the real world.

Arrow returns on January 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

  1. The'll fix it. Olicty actullay happining was one thing, one I personally liked, but making her some kind of "Oracle" bullcrap is gonna be so stupid, she's Felicity, she better keep on walking.

I'm pretty sure they'll fix it too. And now that we have Curtis and The Calculator coming possibly as her father maybe they'll cure her using a new tech.

I like this show, can't wait for it to comeback but come on man. They need to stop with the Batman poaching... seriously, Oracle. I don't want the character to die but making her Oracle is so cheap and pointless. At least with Chloe on Smallville they made her "Watchtower" and kept it Superman/JLA centered. Give Green Arrow the respect of being his own character and not the Green TV version of Batman.

Doubt it's Oracle. Even if it is, it doesn't suddenly mean she's gonna rename herself Barbara Gordon, it wouldn't make sense. Considering her father is the calculator, she may be a new version of Proxy but with another code name that may or not be Oracle. They even worked together at some point. Either way, the "permanent" part is not true but it's necessary for the emotional impact. This is where Darhk's mother box is gonna play a part. Maybe the tattoo Constantine gave Oliver is some kind of key. Maybe Curtis and Felicity find a revolutionary tech in the next three months. Lots of possibilities, I'm excited.

Oracle's origin story is barbara gordon as batgirl. Then the joker happened, she was paralyzed and became an expert in cybertechnology. The point being she was also part of birds of prey and the suicide squad after the accident, both have been used in the show since s1. She may be more famous for batman but it's not her only legacy.
