The Flash & Supergirl Musical Crossover Plans To Include An Original Song

When Supergirl and The Flash return this fall, the two shows can expect to run into each other since The CW is capitalizing on their crossovers. The network will hold its annual mega-crossover later this year when characters from Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Supergirl collide. And, beyond that, both The Flash and Supergirl will team up for a special musical crossover that will likely feature an original track.

Greg Berlanti, an executive producer on the series, recently spoke with IndieWire about the musical and said he'd love the mash-up to have original music. "I have a few ideas for tone and style in my head but we're just starting to talk about what that can be. I do want to try and get an original piece of music written," he said. "As we make a deal on that we'll probably make some announcements on the original songs."

When asked whether famed composer Lin-Manuel Miranda might create the crossover's track, Berlanti brushed off those rumors with a laugh. "I can't say yet because we don't have a deal yet, but I did speak to someone we're really excited about," he explained. "There are some writers I'm incredibly excited to work with."

Speaking with IGN, showrunner Todd Helbing also said the musical mash-up may feature a dance sequence. "[I]f we can get a dance sequence in there on top of it, I would love to do that. Listening to Joe as the lounge singer, singing, and to see Grant and he was karaoke-ing first season, and even watching Danielle, not being able to sing...I'm just really excited, to be honest, to see how it all comes together," he said.

As for the network's anticipated four-way crossover, Berlanti said production on the event has been extremely challenging. He said, "You really are trying to run a single production across three different productions. But they're run as three separate entities. We have to figure out when we're borrowing one actor from where."

He went on to say the creative teams behind the series started production by crafting a villain big enough to uphold the monstrous crossover, prompting the writers to produce over 180 pages of material "It's a three-hour story, almost a miniseries," Berlanti said. "It's very daunting when you hold them all together like that. Each one of these pages is 10 hours of shooting and a visual effects extravaganza. But hopefully it feels like a great kind of crossover comic book sell."

Earlier this summer, fans got their first sneak-peek at the event when actor Stephen Amell tweeted a photo from set. The picture shows a foot-level view of himself dressed as Green Arrow while the colorfully clad boots of stars like Grant Gustin, Melissa Benois, Caity Lotz, and Brandon Routh can also be seen. The photo has led fans to speculate the crossover will air earlier than expected and perhaps even wrap up the "Flashpoint" event.

The Flash Season 3 premieres Tuesday, October 4 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. Supergirl will follow with its premiere on Monday, October 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
