Japanese Teacher Threatens Elementary Students With His Death Note

In the world of anime, there are plenty of terrifying objects, but few are as popular as the Death Note. Created by Tsugumi Ohba, Death Note tells the story of a high school boy named Light Yagami who is able to kill anyone in the world by simply writing their name in his Death Note. The thrilling series stands as one of the most popular franchises in anime, and it has had some far-reaching effects. Now, it looks like one Japanese school is being confronted with its own skeletal Shinigami thanks to Death Note.

Apparently, one elementary school teacher thought it would be a great idea to threaten his students with his own death note. And, as you can imagine, it has not gone over so well.

According to a newspaper in the Fukushima Prefecture, one of its local elementary schools has recently had to address a troubling issue involving Death Note. On Wednesday, the school held a meeting to discusses an incident involving one of its teachers threatening students with his Death Note, and the school formally asked for the forgiveness of parents.

According to the school, a male teacher who is in his 30s pulled up an image of Kira's Death Note on a tablet. The teacher then showed the picture to students who were misbehaving and threatened to write their names in it between November and December 2016. The school said they received four reports about the incident from students in fourth and sixth grade.

The students' homeroom teacher learned of the incidents and reported them to the school's higher-ups. The teacher in question was reprimanded for his conduct. Speaking to the local newspaper, the school's president said, "I don't think the kids had good feelings about this. As a method of warning, it's inappropriate."

Sadly, this is not the first incident of Death Note being used in schools in a punitive or even threatening way. Back in February 2015, a fifth grader in Pittsburgh was suspended after he posted a death note. That same month, a student in Kentucky was also investigated for writing a list of students he wished to pen in a death note for his own. In 2016, an Ohio student was also suspended for writing his own death note and bringing it to class.

Originally published as a manga, Death Note tells the story of Light Yagami after the high school student comes across a strange notebook with deadly powers. Should the journal's owner inscribe someone's name in its pages, the intended victim will die. Intoxicated by his godlike power, Light begins to kill those he deems unworthy while local police frantically try to discover the culprit behind these mysterious deaths.
