When news broke that Fullmetal Alchemist was getting a live-action adaptation, fans were resistant to say the least. The fan-favorite series is a cornerstone for shonen readers, and many feared Warner Bros. Japan would muck up the project. However, a new promo poster for the film has got fans feeling alright.
As you can see below, the official Twitter account for Fullmetal Alchemist gifted fans a sweet poster to celebrate its State Alchemists. The picture sees Roy Mustang at attention in the center while Riza Hawkeye and Maes Hughes stand on either side of him. The adorable Black Hayate can be seen pawing the ground to the side, and other State Alchemists are also shown saluting.
If you are not familiar with the Fullmetal Alchemist live-action film, then you have some history to brush up on. The movie was in development for years; originally, the project was slated to undergo production in 2013, but a hold was put on it due to budget and CGI concerns. The film was officially announced on May 2016, and director Fumikio Sori told press in March 2017 he hoped his adaptation would be faithful to the manga.
“Since the original story consists of 27 volumes, I cut it down in to two hours, but we will stay faithful to the manga," Sori said. "I can’t tell you much details yet, but I think that you can guess what will be the main story based from the cast that was already announced."
“Since I’m a big fan of the original myself, I don’t plan to change the setting, the world view, and make a different story, so please don’t worry about that," Sori continued. "Of course we will have the philosopher’s stone coming out [somewhere in the story].”
The film stars Ryosuke Yamada as Edward Elric, and Alphonse is brought to life totally by CGI. Tsubasa Honda, Dean Fujioka, and Misako Renbutsu also star in the film. Fullmetal Alchemist is slated to hit Japanese theaters on December 1, 2017.
If you are not familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist, then you have plenty of time to watch the anime before its live-action film arrives. The series follows brothers Edward and Alphonse after their mother tragically passes. They attempt to use alchemy to resurrect her, but the attempt takes Edward’s arm and leg - and it takes Alphonse’s entire body. Determined to get their bodies restored, Edward and Alphonse try to become State Alchemists so they can find the location of a powerful item known as the Philosopher’s Stone. But their journey ultimately leads them into a seedy world of government corruption and mass genocide.
