We seem to be getting a lot of older franchises coming back to the PlayStation 4, including Crash Bandicoot, who'll be returning in a new N. Sane Trilogy next month; WipEout, which will race back onto the scene with an Omega Collection in a few weeks; and God of War, featuring Kratos like we've never seen him before.

But what about Spyro the Dragon? Back in the days of the original PlayStation, Insomniac Games made quite a great trilogy featuring this fire-breathing character. Since then, we've seen him in a few adventures from the team at Sierra, as well as his involvement in the Skylanders series, but he's been dormant for quite some time. Could he be due for a comeback?

According to PlayStation Universe, a new promo image has popped up on the PlayStation Netherlands page featuring a number of iconic PlayStation characters. Among these include Kat from Gravity Rush, Kratos from God of War, Parappa the Rapper and Crash Bandicoot. But if you take a close look, you'll also see another familiar character – Spyro!

The text underneath the picture reads out as "and the 12 points go to," indicating some kind of Eurovision song contest. We're not entirely sure what that means, but the promotion could point at a possible return to Spyro, maybe with a remastered trilogy, along the same lines of what Crash Bandicoot is getting with his N. Sane Trilogy.

It certainly wouldn't be a bad idea, especially now, with a lot of PlayStation icons getting their due again. After all, Sony recently announced that it was bringing back the Jak and Daxter games as PlayStation 2-to-PlayStation 4 releases later this year, including the racing game Jak X, along with Naughty Dog's original platformers.

Obviously, nothing's confirmed at this time, and Insomniac certainly is busy these days with its Spider-Man project, which could be coming out for PlayStation 4 this year. But still, with E3 just around the corner, Sony could be springing a big Spyro surprise on us, just as it did with Crash Bandicoot last year. We'll see what happens when the big show unfolds in just a few weeks.
