The Fallout franchise has evolved since its first release back in 1997. From its humble beginnings, the game itself continued to evolve into a bigger and bigger RPG in its own class. Though the play style and lore around the series as grown significantly, it couldn't have done so without the solid roots that the first game gave it. To celebrate this iconic series, the original Fallout title is free on its birthday for Steam users.

Fallout 1 is only free today for the celebration, so make sure to score your copy (if you haven't already) before the clock strikes 11:59 PM PT today, September 30th. After the birthday event is over, the game will revert back to its original $20 price tag on Steam.

Unfortunately, the Fallout special is only available for the first one because this is the exact date that the original was released into the world. No other titles in the franchise are a part of this deal, but it is still a great opportunity for those that were newer coming into the world of Fallout to experience its roots at no cost.

With Fallout VR slated for a December release, there is no shortage of ways to experience this retro-futuristic apocalyptic wasteland. According the original's official description:

"You've just unearthed the classic post-apocalyptic role-playing game that revitalized the entire CRPG genre. The Fallout® SPECIAL system allows drastically different types of characters, meaningful decisions and development that puts you in complete control. Explore the devastated ruins of a golden age civilization. Talk, sneak or fight your way past mutants, gangsters and robotic adversaries. Make the right decisions or you could end up as another fallen hero in the wastelands..."

The first Fallout is available on Steam right now for free, you can scoop up your copy right here.
