Back in 2002, moviegoers around the world were treated to Sony Pictures blockbusting go at a Marvel icon thanks to Spider-Man. The superhero flick saw Tobey Maguire suit up as the wall-crawling hero, and the New York vigilante was paired on-screen with a famous love interest. Mary Jane Watson was brought to life by none other than Kirsten Dunst. The actress played one-half of the superhero couple throughout Sam Raimi's trilogy. However, the character has kept out of the limelight in Sony Pictures' most recent reboots of Spider-Man.
It doesn't look like Dunst is unhappy about her character's absence though. If anything, she might be pleased. In a recent interview with Variety, Dunst shared her thoughts on the franchise's film reboots, and the actress seems pleased that Mary Jane's only debut has been with her - so far.
When Dunst was asked about Sony's choice to continually reboot Spider-Man, the actress was nonplussed.
"I don't care," she said, referring to Sony's most recent Spider-Man reboots "Everyone likes our Spider-Man. C'mon, am I right or what? Listen, I'd rather be in the first ones than the new ones."
In fact, Dunst even gushed over how much she had wanted to be brought into Raimi's take on Spider-Man specifically. It isn't strange to hear the actress' bias towards the original Spider-Man films. Dunst even admitted she had wished a fourth movie was green-lit, but alas; The actress never did get another chance to play Mary Jane after Spider-Man 3 swung into theaters.
"I wanted to be in that movie so badly," Dunst said about Raimi's first Spider-Man movie. "I loved it, and I wish we could have made a fourth."
For now, Spider-Man seems like it is still finding its webbing in Hollywood. Andrew Garfield helped bring Sony's second reboot to life with The Amazing Spider-Man before Tom Holland recently assumed the mantle. The new star is the first to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the hero debuted in Captain America: Civil War. Soon, fans will get the chance see the vigilante return to theaters with a solo venture. Spider-Man: Homecoming is slated to hit theaters later this summer.
