While in an interview with ScreenGeek recently, Mikkelsen affirmed that he's open to taking on a role like Doctor Doom, as supervillains getting their own solo film showcases is an interesting prospect for the actor. When asked directly if he'd be down for Doom, Mikkelsen said:
"Yeah, it's always interesting. They are experimenting with doing some of the villain's stories as well. Let's see if they do that. I'm not familiar that they've done it with anyone yet. They haven't done it with The Joker [and] they haven't done it with The Penguin. So we'll see when that day comes."
In Marvel Comics, Doctor Doom is Victor Von Doom, a young man from the isolated European country known as Latveria. His mother was a sorcerer who died while Victor was young, while his father was a tribal leader and medicine man who was sentenced to die when he couldn't save a nobleman's wife. After losing his father while on the run, Victor returned to Latveria and became a brilliant scientist, who was obsessed with the occult. While studying at university in America (alongside fellow scientific prodigy, Reed Richards), Victor suffered an horrific injury, and traveled the world looking for healing - eventually coming a monastery where he forge a suit of armor, and truly embrace his thirst for power.
In the end, Doom returned home to conquer Latveria, using a combination of technology and arcane magic to protect his people, and hatch his schemes for universal (not just worldly) domination.
The origin story of Doom has a lot of fantastical and dramatic gravitas, that would make it great for a solo movie. The role of doom is one that's undoubtedly hard to nail down, but after seeing what Mikkelsen did with Hannibal Lecter, it's understandable why so many fans want to see him in the role.
