That Hashtag Show has revealed a list of character breakdowns that it has obtained in relation to 20th Century Fox's upcoming Gambit film. While these characters are all described using codenames, the descriptions offer hints as to who each character may be.
Keep in mind that its impossible to tell for sure when a movie studio is planning to introduce a character from the comics versus creating a new character. For the purposes of this article, we’re leaning on the assumption that Fox would like to borrow from Marvel Comics whenever possible.
Tatum is playing the lead role of Remy LeBeau, aka the mutant Gambit. Lea Sedoux was previously cast as the female lead, Bella Donna Boudreaux, but the delays in filming and director shuffle mean that the role of Bella Donna is being recast.
Here’s the description of the character referred to as Mariya, which seems to be Bella Donna:
[MARIYA] Female, Caucasian,
Requiring sequel options makes sense here, since the star-crossed romance between Gambit, a member of the Thieves Guild, and Bella Donna, the heir to the Assassin’s Guild, is likely to be at the center of proposed Gambit film trilogy.
Next is the shadowy character of Lewis, which seems to be X-Men villain Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister:
[LEWIS] Male, any ethnicity, 40s-50s. Elegant and intelligent. An appealing entrepreneur with an unexpected dark side. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTION.
Sinister is one of the biggest villains in X-Men comics history, so it definitely makes sense that Fox is looking for a long-term commitment from this actor. They are also reportedly going big on this casting, with James Bond star Daniel Craig being number one on the studios’ shortlist.
The character descriptions for Mrs. Stanton, Nash, and Magnus/Wolfgang appear to be for Bella Donna's family. Here are the descriptions:
[MRS. STANTON] Female, Caucasian, 50s. An elegant older woman with a French accent. Must speak fluent French.
[NASH] Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s-early 30s. A potent threat. Heir to his mother’s business. Malevolent.
[MAGNUS/WOLFGANG] Male, authentic French. 40s. A French criminal. Must speak fluent French.
Mrs. Stanton would be Bella Donna's mother, the head of the Assassin's Guild. Nash would be Bella Donna's brother Julien. In the comics, Julien challenges Gambit ot a duel and this fight is when Gambit's powers first manifest.
Magnus/Wolfgang could be Bella Donna's father, Marius Bourdreaux. Marius was instrumental in arranging Balla Donna and Remy's engagement in an attempt to broker peace between the two rival guilds.
The character of Fritz appears to be Gambit's mentor and father figure, Jean Luc LeBeau:
[FRITZ] Male, any ethnicity, 40s-50s. A professional thief. Charismatic con-artist. Warm hearted but untrustworthy. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTION.
Jean Luc helped turn Remy LeBeau into Gambit, introducing him to sleight of hand, bo staffs, trenchcoats, and flair, which would all become some of Gambit's most recognizable calling cards.
Wesley appears to be Emil Lapin:
[WESLEY] Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s-mid 30s. Aspirational but weak minded. Soulful and sensitive. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTION.
Emil is Gambit's cousin and a skilled engineer. His skills are vital to Gambit's heists.
The characts of Pia and Joe are harder to nail down.
[PIA] Female, Native American, early 20s. Street, tough, punk. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTIONS.
[JOE] Male, any ethnicity, 30-50 years old. We are looking for actors 5’6” and under. He’s a gun for hire. He is the black sheep of his family. Not from good breeding but from a working-class family. Short. Puck-like, with an interesting character face.REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTIONS.
The description Joe as being "puck-like" makes it easy to speculate that he could be Puck, the acrobatic members of Alpha Flight.
That Hashtag Show speculates that Pia could be indicative of a crossover with New Mutants using the character Dani Moonstar, played by Blu Hunt, but if Puck could be in the movie, why not Talisman, the Native American mystic from Alpha Flight?
The character of Carissa appears to be the powerful and mysterious mutant known as Candra:
[CARISSA]Female, mixed race, 10-12 years old. Ethereal and other worldly. Very expressive. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTION.
Candra has the ability to use telekinesis and to unlock other mutants' gifts. However, 10-12 years old unusually young to cast for the character, so maybe that's not the case.
Boris seems to be the unsavory type who may in league with Sinister, possibly the mutant slave-trade known as the Pig, whom Gambit encounters as a child.
[BORIS] Male, mid-20s-30s, Hispanic. Tough, menacing, with a dangerous, craggy character face. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTIONS.
The fact that Boris requires a sequel backs up the idea that he's somehow related to Sinister's plans.
Lastly, there are are a group of vaguely sketched characters who are likely members of the Thieves' Guild or Assassin's Guild.
[WILHELM] Male, any ethnicity, 30s. Dangerous street criminal. Protective and loyal to his family. Intensely loyal and violent.
[GARY] Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s-early 30s. A little simple; dim-witted and passive.
[NONA] Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s-30 years old. Uptight, corporate, vicious, sexual. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTION.
[FRANKLIN] Male, any ethnicity, 20s. An appealing street kid. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTION.
[BEN] Male, any ethnicity, 20s. Just reaching adulthood. A street kid, a disaffected outsider, an orphan. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTION.
[HOWARD] Male, Causcasian. 50s. A refined European mobster who speaks fluent French.
[VERA] Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s-early 30s. Beautiful, smart, tough, fiery and unpredictable. ROLE REQUIRES SEQUEL OPTION.
Characters like Jacques LeBeau, Henri LeBeau, Etienne Marceaux, and Mercy LeBeau could all fit these roles.
Gambit is scheduled to open in theaters on February 14, 2017.
