Star Wars may center much of its focus on sci-fi action, but the franchise is no stranger to romance. Couples like Anakin and Padme thrived in the series’ prequels, and Han Solo’s love for Leia had fans swooning when Star Wars debuted. When Lucasfilm embarked on its newest film trilogy, fans began to speculate about the sorts of romance the franchise would introduce to fans. However, to the surprise of audiences, Star Wars has yet to usher in any grand romances as of yet.
And, according to the director of The Last Jedi, they won’t be getting any steamy scene this December either.
Recently, Vanity Fair had the chance to cover The Last Jedi to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars. The film’s cast and crew sat down to chat about the film, and it was there that Rian Johnson told fans his movie won’t focus on an epic romance like the one Han and Leia shared.
“[There will be] no one-to-one equivalent of the Han-to-Leia, burning, unrequited love. In our story, that’s not a centerpiece,” the director stressed.
For Star Wars shipper, this update will come as a blow to fans. Ever since The Force Awakens premiered, audiences have fan-casted their own Star Wars couples. Some prefer to pair Rey with the likes of Finn or Poe while others see the heroine falling for a reformed Kylo Ren. There are plenty more fans who ship Finn and Poe together. But, before you knock that last ship, you should know the head of Lucasfilm has talked about Finn possibly falling for Poe.
In an interview with E-Cartelera, Kathleen Kennedy revealed whether the Resistance pilot and former First Order trooper may get together. The translation of her answer (via Hitfix) had this to say: “We've talked about it, but I think you're not going to see it in The Last Jedi.”
So, who knows? Maybe fans will have plenty of lovey-dovey moments to look forward to in Episode IX?
