'Supernatural' Producer Teases When Castiel Will Come Back

When it comes to Supernatural, no one stays dead for long unless you happen to be John Winchester. The series has been on for more than a decade, and its major players have been brought back to life more times than fans care to count. When Supernatural returns for its thirteenth season, it will do so without Castiel at first, but don't worry yet.

After all, the show's executive producer did just tease when the angel will make his comeback.

During a recent interview with Variety, Andrew Dabb discussed the challenges the Winchester Brothers will face next season. The producer explained Sam and Dean will be very lonely when the show comes back, and much of that will have to do with the prolonged loss of Castiel.

"Dean, and Jack to a great extent, had a great bond with Castiel, and they have to marinate a little bit and feel the loss," Dab said .

If you were hoping that Castiel would be revived from the start of Supernatural's premiere, then you have another thing coming. The producer said the angel would not rush back in "midway through episode one." Supernatural wants its leads to reflect on what life without Castiel is really like before the character gets revived - again.

"When he makes his triumphant return as a changed character, [the characters] will have an even bigger reaction," Dabb said, explaining Supernatural's reason for keeping Castiel dead for a bit longer than usual.

In the past, Dabb has expanded on the show's reasons for toying with the Winchester Brothers and their grief over Castiel. The angel died in the finale of season twelve when he tried to get back at Lucifer. Castiel managed to trap the devil in an alternate reality, but Lucifer managed to stab him with an angel blade at the very last moment. Castiel died in a flash of blinding light, and Dean was left stunned by the loss of his friend.

During an interview with TVLine in July, Dabb said Dean will have the most questions over Castiel's death.

"That's one of the reasons that Cas is deader than normal, because we want to play with that [grief]," the producer said.

"With Dean, especially, everything he's lost… He feels it hard. He's put so much hope in building up Team Free Will 2.0 and building up this very cool group of people he's working with. He's opened himself up in a lot of different ways with Mary, with Crowley, with Cas, and he's been punched in the heart about a million times in the last season. So you're dealing with someone who's a little bit more guarded, a little bit more jaded, a little bit more not necessarily asking, 'What's it all for?' but certainly asking, 'Did they do the right thing? Should they have made the sacrifices they made? Should they have asked other people to make the sacrifices they made?' Those are all questions that are at the forefront of our guys' minds."

Supernatural returns to The CW on October 12th at 8 p.m. ET.
