Yesterday, Titan Comics officially unveiled their Doctor Who summer event comic, which was touted as a crossover bringing together the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors.

It was curious then that the covers for the series featured a banner promising four Doctors, rather than three. One cover featured a silhouetted figure in the distant background. The now released photo covers for the series reveal that the silhouetted character is indeed John Hurt’s War Doctor, as some had speculated.

The War Doctor was introduced in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, “The Day of the Doctor.” This version of the Doctor was retroactively added to the Doctor’s history as the weary Doctor who took part in the Time War against the Daleks. His involvement in the war made him unwilling to take the formal name of the Doctor, which also conveniently allowed the series to avoid having to renumber all of the “New Who” Doctors to account for his addition to the Doctor’s history.

So does this mean that the crossover comic will somehow touch again on the events of the Time War? It seems likely, since “The Day of the Doctor” ended with the Time War finished and the War Doctor beginning his process of regenerating into the Ninth Doctor. We’ll find out when the weekly event series begins on August 12.
