Justice League Action, the long-rumored new Justice League animated series, was officially announced by Cartoon Network Friday. The animated show, based on DC Comics characters, has no official release date, but is listed as “coming soon” in a press release.

Notably, the series will include Kevin Conroy reprising his role as Batman, which he’s been playing since Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, making this his twenty-fifth year with the character. His counterpart since then has been Mark Hamill as the Joker, and he will also make his return for Justice League Action. They’ll be joined by James Woods as Lex Luthor, Diedrich Bader (the voice of Batman on Batman: The Brave and the Bold) as Booster Gold, and many more thus-far unannounced voice actors.

The series will feature a different format from previous Justice League shows, with eleven-minute episodes similar to their comedy series Teen Titans Go!. The creative team is full of DC Animation alums with Sam Register (TTG!) executive producing, and Butch Lukic (Justice League, Batman Beyond), Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series), and Jim Krieg (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) also producing. From the press release:

“Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman lead the DC Comics Super Heroes against their most infamous foes in adventures packed with relentless thrills, fun and action. No need to wait for the good stuff to start, each eleven-minute episode jumps in with lightning-paced action and heroics. Whether defending the Earth, facing invaders from space, or battling the bizarre forces of magic, the always-rotating team of Justice League heroes, are up to any challenge.”

The previously-leaked poster showed several silhouettes of other heroes together. The new poster, showing a younger-looking Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in the foreground, includes sketches of The Flash, Shazam, John Constantine, Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes), and the villainous Darkseid (and more) looming behind them.

It’s interesting to see Booster Gold as the only other named and cast hero – possibly because of Bader’s return to DC Animation, but it could also be indicative of those live-action Booster rumors.

Expect more news on Justice League Action soon as its impending release approaches.
