Cumberbatch revealed the trailer on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ABC (also owned by Disney), appearing as a large head on a video screen with a booming, echoing voice – in a comedy sketch. Before revealing the trailer, he made a balloon animal, then disappeared.
One of the most anticipated films of Marvel’s new slate, Doctor Strange has already been teased in previous movies (notably Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and marks the introduction of magic as a major force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (its use by Scarlet Witch being comparably minor, and Thor’s related magic being specifically explained as high-level science).
Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
Derrickson is directing with a cast that includes Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, a.k.a. Night Nurse, Benedict Wong as Wong and Mads Mikkelsen will play an unspecified villain role.
Marvel’s Dr. Strange will cast a spell on audiences November 4, 2016.
