The series, which centers on the titular son of Professor Charles Xavier, will take audiences inside of the character’s fractured mind. FX has lined up a murderer’s row of strong supporting actors including Amber Midthunder, Jean Smart, and Aubrey Plaza.

Set in the world of the X-Men film franchise, Legion will take a similar approach to the one that allowed Deadpool so much success earlier in the year: sharing that world and all the benefits of having it set up for them, while ignoring most of the actual characters and continuity.

David “Legion” Haller, played by Dan Stevens, is “a haunted man, trying to find his way back to sanity, but he’s getting tired and is about to give up when he meets the girl of his dreams,” according to his original casting breakdown.

Legion will be produced by Bryan Singer, who recently said, “[Legion is] part of the X-Men universe, but when you watch it, you wouldn’t have to label it, it could exist entirely on its own.”

Legion is the story of a troubled young man who may be more than human. It introduces the story of David Haller, who since he was a teenager, has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.

Legion will premiere in early 2017.
